Muskox-Bull's-Broadside, Photograph by Kaspar Rønningen

Photographed at Reinheim, Dovrefjell National Park on September, 2024.

In this striking close-up, a mature bull muskox — likely nine or ten years old — fills the frame with sheer presence. The peaceful encounter unfolded only after a long, patient wait and a respectful approach, with Kaspar staying low and still, signaling no threat. The bull, calm and confident, eventually grazed nearby, allowing for this rare moment. His sweeping black cover hairs — some of the longest in the animal kingdom, second only to human hair — cascade through the lower part of the frame. Above them, you’ll notice sun-bleached qiviut, the fine underwool that offers insulation through the Arctic winter. Most of it has already been shed for the season, but a few stubborn tufts cling to his back, catching the light like wisps of gold.
